HeartSmart Kids™ programs are curriculum based, they focus on encouraging children to make heart-healthy lifestyle choices in a fun, challenging and engaging way within the main areas of heart facts, healthy eating, active living and being smoke-free. There are programs for grades K-3, grades 4-6 (English and French), and  a grades 4-6 Aboriginal Program. HeartSmart Kids™ Family Resources are also available.

Educators receive the programs by attending an interactive free 1-hour workshop. Workshops are offered throughout the school year.

If you are interested in teaching the HeartSmart Kids™ program for the first time, begin by registering for the e-learning module below.

If you are a returning teacher, previously certified in HeartSmart Kids™, complete the 2011-2012 Resource Renewal Form to continue teaching HeartSmart Kids™ in the 2011-2012 school year.

The new HeartSmart Kids™ FREE e-learning module makes it easier than ever to become one of the 8,000-plus HeartSmart Kids™ teachers.

The module allows educators to learn about the HeartSmart Kids™ program anytime and from anywhere with internet access. Teachers who complete the module will also receive FREE classroom resources such as lesson plans, a class set of student magazines and classroom posters.

HeartSmart Kids™ K-3

Your students are about to meet some very cool characters: Griz, Grizella, Dr. Surefoot and Uncle Smogley. They are the hosts throughout the HeartSmart Kids™ Funbook that will take your kids on a journey to uncover the clues to a healthy heart.

Since its launch in the spring of 1999, HeartSmart Kids™ K-3 has reached more than 4260 educators and 127,800 students.

HeartSmart Kids™ 4-6 (English and French)

Introduced in the fall of 1995, the HeartSmart Kids™ 4-6 program has reached over 4590 educators and 137,700 students. The program is designed to encourage the adoption of heart-smart habits at an early age.

Program includes:

  • Easy-to-use activity lessons
  • Colourful posters
  • Magazines for each student to keep

HeartSmart Kids™ 4-6 Aboriginal Program

The HeartSmart Kids™ Aboriginal Program is an adaptation of the original HeartSmart Kids program, only it includes the cultural values of British Columbia’s many Aboriginal people. For grades 4-6, this program still stresses the three important issues of eating well, being active, and living smoke-free. There are several sections which touch on Aboriginal culture with the hope of making it more possible for Aboriginal youth to make healthy life choices.

Program includes:

  • Educator guide – with ready-made lesson plans
  • Culturally relevant activities relating to the main heart health themes: healthy eating, active living and being smoke-free
  • Focuses on spiritual, emotional, physical and mental aspects of health
  • Colorful student posters
  • Class set of student magazines
  • Program meets several of the Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the BC Curriculum for Grades 4-6

Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon congratulates the efforts of students participating in school fundraising programs like Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. These programs help fund the development of health promotion programs like HeartSmart Kids™
