How to become an RTA (Registered Training Affiliate)

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon supports a coordinated approach to reduce the incidence of death and disability from heart disease and stroke by facilitating the implementation of the Chain of Survival. To accomplish this goal, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon has developed a unique designation called the Registered Training Affiliate system. It recognizes resuscitation programs in BC & Yukon that use Heart and Stroke Foundation materials and curriculum. However, involvement in the RTA program is expanded for agencies and individuals that want to be included in the resuscitation network to receive information or agencies that use their own materials and curriculum and submit their materials for review to ensure that they are consistent with the current resuscitation guidelines.

Resuscitation Guidelines were reviewed and updated in November 2005. With the updated science information for the new guidelines, new curriculum was also established Heart Association and developed a North American curriculum. Included in this system and defined. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada has joined with the American are the participant provider resources, instructor resources, and course curriculum. These resources have now been completed and are available at 1-888-HSF-INFO, (1-888-473-4630).

As a result of these changes all Heart and Stroke Foundation courses must use approved course materials and curriculum. Canadian regulations related to resuscitation programs are described in the Instructor Resource for Resuscitation Programs manual, catalogue number RE3205E. These new recommendations initiated a review of the Registered Training Affiliate system and three levels of affiliation were identified. Each level of affiliation has a specific term and associated fee, see Appendix 1. Terms of affiliation continue to be related to providing Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support programs. Within the Basic Life Support programs, Health Care Provider, Heart Saver, Heart Saver AED, CPR for Schools, & CPR for Family and Friends are included.
