The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon's High School Summer Research Program is available to Grade 11 students currently enrolled in a high school in British Columbia and the Yukon. Now in its 15th year, this program is designed to motivate students with top grades and a strong interest in biology and/or medicine to consider a career in cardiovascular research.

During the month of July, students are invited to spend 3 ½ weeks working in the laboratory of one of the Foundation's funded researchers. Students also participate in a wide range of activities related to cardiovascular health. Some examples include:

  • a ride along on a working ambulance
  • a visit to the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre
  • a nutrition class
  • observation of an open-heart surgery
  • a CPR certification class
  • an opportunity to participate in a heart-healthy cooking class

The impact of this program is long lasting. Many participants go back to educate others in their schools and respective communities; many volunteer at their local Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon offices. Participating in this program helps the students to understand why fundraising for vital heart and stroke research is so important.

Grade 11 students interested in applying should speak to their school counselors or science department head as applications and guidelines are mailed to the schools at the beginning of January. This year the program runs from July 2- July 25 and the application deadline is April 17, 2009. If you require further information regarding this program, please contact the Research Coordinator, Leili Heidema at LHeidema@hsf.bc.ca or 604.730.7351.
